{"id":78,"date":"2023-10-10T04:48:05","date_gmt":"2023-10-10T04:48:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.theactorshandbook.com\/78-2\/"},"modified":"2023-10-10T05:20:35","modified_gmt":"2023-10-10T05:20:35","slug":"interviews","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.theactorshandbook.com\/publicity\/interviews\/","title":{"rendered":"Interviews"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"mainContent\">\n<h1>Publicity:\u00a0 Interviews<\/h1>\n<p><strong>1) Be ready to be interviewed.\u00a0<\/strong>Within a given organization, pick the person who is articulate and personally engaging, who can easily avoid getting provoked by conflict-engendering journalists.\u00a0It is most important to pick the person who will sound positive and instill confidence in strangers that your event will take place, or that your product will be delivered.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>2) Be sure of your facts.<\/strong>\u00a0 Anticipate the questions likely to be asked and write out your replies. Do not memorize<\/p>\n<p>them&#8211;the fact that your brain has formulated the sentences beforehand will help you quickly recall answers.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>3)\u00a0 Outline your agenda.<\/strong> Jot down a quick outline of what you want to say in the interview (this does not always coincide with the journalist\u2019s agenda) and memorize phrases that will get you out of trouble. Some journalists will try to sensationalize the story. Don\u2019t let them change the focus of the interview to their perception of\u00a0 \u201cpersonality flaw which compels you to become involved with X.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>a) Just say \u201cI think it is really important to focus on the issue of\u2026\u2026\u201d\u00a0(Don\u2019t make ad hominem arguments.\u00a0 Stick to the issues.\u00a0 The focus of the conversation should not become the conflict of whether you want to answer that or whether you should answer that, but rather move the conversation forward to what you feel needs to be said).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>b) Unscrupulous journalists like to polarize and portray issues in black and white, good vs. evil, and generally like to simplify.\u00a0A person may have a viewpoint that is slightly different from yours but is still compatible. Nevertheless, some journalists will paint it as an either\/or, fight-to-the-death situation.\u00a0Unless you are promoting your memoirs, you don\u2019t ever have to allow the journalists to get personal.
